How to macrame at home - 5 FREE essentials to get you started!
Updated: Mar 17
When starting any new hobby, you're never 100% sure if it's one that's going to stick. You usually only find out after spending a lot of money on the 'right' materials, that the new hobby isn't the right one for you.
So when I started teaching myself the different macrame knots, I created a makeshift set up using things I had at home so I didn't have to spend a cent!
The 5 essential things you'll need to get you started are:
Some cord or rope or even some shoelaces
A coat hanger
A pair of sharp scizzors
A tape measure
Turns out this set up only lasted a few days before I went out and upgraded. BUT as Julie Andrews always says, 'it was a very good place to start.' Below is an example of what my first ever set up looked like.
I hung the coat hanger off the back of a dining room chair and got rope from my husband's boat (no he wasn't impressed and no I did not care haha).
It was like this that I practiced my first macrame knots. Once the addiction set in, I then went and bought a clothes rack to work off, some S hooks and a wooden dowel to replace the coat hanger, some proper macrame cord and I've never looked back!
So you see, you don't have to go out and spend a lot of money (in this case none at all) to explore and try out new things. Start with the basics and if you realise it's something you want to pursue, then go out and buy things that make working on your new hobby more comfortable.
Now it's time to set up like I have explained above and tie your first macrame knots using my free online tutorials!
I have created 3 beginner, step by step, video tutorials for you to try out. Head to knotjustcords.com.au/diy. These tutorials go perfectly with this makeshift set up to give you a taste test into the world of macrame.
