Created out of motherhood, isolation, and the need to find some head space.
A little bit about me, how my journey started with macrame and how I came up with my business name
Hi I’m Bree and I’m the owner, maker, creator, behind Knot Just Cords based in Perth, Western Australia.
I was born and raised in Sydney and moved to Perth in 2009 for love!
I’m now a wife and a mum to three crazy yet adorable little boys. Jacob is my eldest, who was born in 2013 and my twins Edward and Samuel were born not 2 years later in 2015.
After the twins were born, we moved to Broome for a country posting with work. It was there I discovered my love for macrame. During a very hard time being away from family and friends, I discovered a therapeutic outlet in macrame that I needed for my mental health.
I tied my first macrame knot in November 2017 when I attended a macrame workshop. To be honest, I didn’t have a very good understanding on what macrame even was, it was more for the fact that it started at 6pm which was witching hour, my husband was due to be home, it would get me out of the house and I’d get a pretty little wall hanging at the end of it. So, I booked it in.
It wasn’t until after that very workshop that I had realised I hadn't thought about the kids for a solid 2 hours. TWO WHOLE HOURS!!!! That for the first time in a very long time, my every waking thought wasn’t consumed with my boys. I had taken the time for ME. I wasn’t a mum, I wasn’t a wife, a daughter or anything else, I was ME. I needed to find a way to get this time into my day every day, so I practiced my knots and taught myself more and made my mum my first wall hanging for Christmas.
My brother Steve, who owns ‘ur place’ with his wife Kathryn, which is an amazing design, furniture and homewares store in NSW, saw my piece hanging on mum's wall and asked where she got it from. He took a picture and sent it to Kat and was then on the phone to me asking if I would make some more pieces for their shop. I flew to Sydney in January to bring over 10 pieces. Steve and Kat drove me to the shop and hung each and every piece up on the shop walls. They are both clever and savvy business people and I knew they wouldn’t have hung anything that wasn’t quality or of a high standard. I knew that it wasn’t just a brother helping his little sister out, (meaning if the pieces were rubbish he would have told me 😊 ) that they genuinely loved my work and it was then, when I was standing looking at my pieces up on the shop walls, that I thought, shit, I could really make something of this.
I flew home to Broome, registered my business name and have been knotting every day since.
How did I come up with my business name…….well….
The house we had in Broome wasn’t exactly big and I had a clothes rack that I was using to work off set up at the base of my bed. I had set up the cords at night before bed ready to start a new piece the next day. Whilst I was laying in bed, I was looking at the cords lined up and said to my husband, that it was funny how to him they are just pieces of cord, but to me they are not just cords, they're possibilities. A symbol of sorts of a new beginning to a design that I will create with my own hands.
My husband looked at me and said you should use that as your business name and so the journey began…….
